How can I help my son lose weight?

Concerned Parent: Hello. My son is 10 and 1/2 years old, 4 foot, 4 inches tall and weighs 99 lbs. He seems to continually put on weight in spite of some light activity such as basketball and lacrosse. We try to keep snacks in the house to a minimum and use only the 100 calorie bags when snacks are needed. He does buy lunch at school but I guess I don''t really know what he is eating. He has a peanut allergy and recently had a bad case of excema. His appetite never seems to be satisfied. My husband, daughter and I all are in good shape and exercise regularly but other than forcing him on the treadmill....what can i do?

A: I want to first commend you and your family on being a good eating role model for you son! Also, the activity that is in place already is a great start. Next, I would try taking him to the grocery store to pick out healthy lunch items so that he can be part of the process. This not only allows you to know what he is eating for lunch versus buying (usually higher calorie items) but also allows your son control over his food choices. You can help by steering him in the right direction i.e. whole grains, fruits and veggies. These food items will help prevent hunger and make him feel full longer. Lastly, let him help in the preparation of his meals. Maybe select a recipe that you prepare together. Continue to encourage family physical activity. If you son continues to gain weight I would take him to a physician to rule out possible medical causes for weight gain.
